LMA and Prozone develop unique online coaching course

The best modern coaching requires a mixture of traditional training methods and emerging technologies. To this end, the League Managers’ Association School of Football Management launched its Evaluating Performance course in January in conjunction with Prozone – world leaders in performance analysis.

The online course is aimed at both current and aspiring coaches who work with professional, semi-professional, elite youth or college players, and wish to learn of the benefits of data interpretation.

Of the 150 individuals who have already joined the course, more than 50 are from the English FA Premier League and the Football league and MLS clubs in the USA, whilst the Scottish FA has signed up its entire technical department staff to the course.

The courses offered by the LMA are recognised by UEFA and other national football associations as pathways to retain UEFA Coaching Awards. The LMA and Prozone have worked with leading online sports education provider Sports Path™ to improve coaches’ evaluation skills through the following major topics:

  • Why evaluation of players can assist decision making
  • How to identify Attacking and Defending Key Performance Indicators which reflect your preferred style of play
  • Methods to use to evaluate both individual and team performance
  • Organize data in order to recognize patterns and detect trends
  • Using the results of evaluation to provide feedback to players
  • How evaluation can help to analyze opponents, assist in talent identification, evaluate your training programme and your performance as a coach
Industry experts

The 15-hour course uses a variety of online methods including more than 300 video interview clips of 15 experts including LMA managers, international managers and directors of coaching and European youth academies.

The LMA has also recruited respected Performance Analysts from leading UEFA Champions League clubs to feature in the interviews which, along with the other facilities of the course, can be accessed at the leisure of the participant over a six-month period.

Prozone provides exclusive performance analysis data from the English Premier League, youth academies and US colleges which are accessed as part of the most comprehensive library of performance evaluation research.

Skills will also be developed through individual assignments, collaborative activities and interactive tasks which cover scouting and analysing teams and players as well as constructing a positional profile.
