Mourinho vows to deliver another European Cup

Jose Mourinho has spoken of his ambition to deliver a 10th European Cup to Real Madrid.

“Nobody else has nine European Cups but Real Madrid do. But there is no direct way to find this success – it is just working well, playing well, thinking well, planning well and having the desire to win every game,” he said.

“When I arrived at Real Madrid we were not a seeded team in the draw. I think they were 10th in the ranking and now after two consecutive semi-finals, we’ve recovered the status as a seeded team.

“We want to maintain it and hopefully play on until the final and win the 10th European Cup for Real Madrid. We’ll do everything for that.”

He added: “The main objective isn’t winning all six games, it is to qualify.

"After that, if we qualify and the conditions are right, we will try to be first in the group."

Hailing Modric

Mourinho (pictured) also hailed his summer signing, former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric as bringing ‘magic’ to his team.

“We have decided to use a relatively small squad so it is important to have many multi-functional players who can play in different positions and give us the balance and stability we need.

“Modric can play as a number six, eight or 10. He has the kind of magic typical of great talents.

"I wanted him because he is a player with so much potential on the football and tactical level and the fans wanted him because he has that artistic sense. That’s why we tried so hard to get him.”

He also has high hopes for new midfielder Michael Essien, who worked with him at Chelsea.

“He had an important injury but he’s through the recovery process. He has a new challenge and is reunited with a coach with whom he’s always had a sympathetic relationship.

"We hope Michael will be the player he always has been.”
