Weston hopeful of progressing to first round

Weston-super-Mare head into this weekend’s FA Cup third qualifying round match against Havant & Waterlooville full of hope that they can reach the first round proper after a strong start to their season.

The Seagulls advanced through the second qualifying round thanks to a spirited performance against Blue Square Bet South rivals Dorchester Town.

They will have to produce the same type of performance against a Havant & Waterlooville side who have recent FA Cup pedigree after their heroics against Liverpool at Anfield in 2008 - where they took the lead twice against the Premier League giants, after beating League sides Notts County and Swansea City.

Seagulls' assistant manager Jon Haile said: “If we are going to reach the first round proper then we are certainly doing it the hard way. Neither club would have wanted this draw, which was the same with Dorchester.”

Haile continued: “I am very good friends with Havant manager, Shaun Gale, and I know a lot of people down there. It is a great football club with a huge pedigree and tradition in the competition.

"They are genuine giant killers and I am sure they would like another opportunity to play Liverpool at Anfield. There isn’t a lot we don’t know about each other’s teams.

“Since we have been in charge Havant have not beaten us in three attempts with one win for us and two draws.  That counts for nothing now and I am pleased we have home advantage.”

The assistant manager added: “We genuinely want to reach the first round proper because not only will it benefit the club financially it will significantly raise the profile of not only the football club but the town as well.”
