Van Persie and Walker win PFA Player of the Year awards

Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie and Tottenham defender Kyle Walker were named PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year in Sunday evening's awards ceremony in London.

Van Persie's award was not a surprise, but Spurs and England full back Walker, 21, beat Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Manchester United's Danny Welbeck to the Young Player award.

"I was a bit surprised because defenders don't normally get these awards and get the limelight as much as the centre forwards," he said. "It is a great honour to get the award and hopefully there is more to come.

"It is always an honour to be selected by the people you play against and hopefully I can get a few more of these and some medals with Tottenham along the way."

Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, who was jailed for five years on Friday after being convicted of rape, was named in the League One team of the year - as the deadline for voting in the awards was in mid-March.

Preston North End defender Graham Alexander received the PFA Merit award in recognition of his services to the game.
