Key player watch - Manchester City

Manchester City began their Premier League title defence on Sunday with a thrilling 3-2 victory over newly promoted Southampton.

In a new season that will be more demanding than the last, City will need to improve upon last season’s triumphs as their main contenders Manchester United and Chelsea have strengthened their squad in an attempt to topple the title holders.

Mancini will be looking to his key men for inspiration towards their title defence.

Ivory man

Ivorian bulldozer Yaya Toure will be an essential part of the City squad, last season he showed pure talent at both ends of the pitch.

His midfield presence is an intimidating sight, combining strength, speed and sheer power. Toure scored some important goals last season and displayed breathtaking talent to suggest he's one of Africa's best exports.

Mancini will need to ensure his squad can cope without Toure’s presence during the winter months, both Yaya and brother Kolo Toure will inevitably be called up for international duty to star in Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations campaign.

This could provoke another signing from Mancini as City continue their interest in Italian dynamo Danielle De Rossi.

The terrible twosome – Samir Nasri & David Silva

Two midfield playmakers that simply ooze creativity, vision and attacking flair.

These two will feature heavily in Mancini’s plans this season, both provided inspired contributions during the previous campaign and City fans will be relishing the prospect of plenty more flamboyant performances.

Nasri kicked off the season with an assist, the winning goal and the Man of the Match award during the season opener. Two similar players with similar attributes and styles but with very different backgrounds.

One ex-Arsenal talisman, the other a former La Liga star, bringing them both together is seen as a master stroke by Mancini. He’ll be hoping they can galvanise their title defence.

Argentine attack

The Citizens posses one of the best attacking line’s in the world, two Argentine internationally renowned goal machines.

Championship winner Sergio Aguero was forced off after a strong challenge which looked to have twisted his knee during the season opener but the injury isn’t believed to be as bad as first thought.

There’s no doubt young Sergio will look to emulate his fine first season at the club and push for the league's top goal-scorer.

Tevez looked back to his old self, a new mentality, fresh desire to play for the club and what looks like an improved physique, the fans will feel as though he is a new signing.

The world knows what a fantastic talent he is, after a disrupted season last year he looks ready to prove any sceptics wrong.

Defensive strength

Skipper Vincent Kompany looks determined to orchestrate the defence again towards another title.

You can be sure to see some crucial tackles during the season and perhaps some bullet-headed goals from the Belgian destroyer.

The skipper looks to have established a strong partnership with fellow centre-back Joleon Lescott.

The pair have very similar characteristics, stature and determination that proved to be the foundation of their success last season.

Aguero’s injury forced Roberto Mancini to comment that he “may be forced to re-assess his transfer dealing if he faces a lengthy spell on the sideline.”

There could still be some transfer action for City fans to look forward to. With Mancini already looking into bolstering his midfield, there could be an addition to the attack on the cards.
