Birmingham snap up Lovenkrands

Birmingham City have signed Danish international Peter Lovenkrands on a free transfer after being released by Newcastle United.

The 32-year-old, capped 22 times for his country, becomes Blues boss Lee Clark’s first signing as he gears up for his first season in charge at St. Andrews.

Lovenkrands left his homeland for Britain in 2000 when he moved to Glasgow Rangers.  He scored 37 times in 129 games for the Scottish club.

After six years at Ibrox, he moved to Schalke 04 to play in the German Bundesliga before moving to St. James Park in 2009.

While at Newcastle, Lovenkrands scored 19 goals and was also part of the squad which was relegated to the Championship in 2009.

City’s signing of the striker is their first since a transfer embargo was imposed in March, for failing to fill their 2010/11 accounts on time.

Lee Clark’s side will play Championship new boys Charlton Athletic on the opening day of the league season.
