Leeds snap up Varney as Pompey exodus continues

Portsmouth look set to lose another senior player after Luke Varney successfully completed a medical at Leeds United.

The 29-year-old is likely to be the ninth addition to Neil Warnock’s side as he attempts to rebuild a team capable of challenging for a top six finish.

The Yorkshire side would be the winger’s seventh club after spells at Crewe, Charlton, Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool.

Varney (pictured) would become the third player to swap Fratton Park for Elland Road this summer as he would join former team-mates Jason Pearce and Jamie Ashdown.

If Varney does complete the move, Pompey would be left with only seven senior players on the books and departures look likely for David Norris, Liam Lawrence, Greg Halford, Eric Huseklepp, Tal Ben Haim, Dave Kitson and Nwankwo Kanu.

Pompey fans have been told the mass exodus is needed in order to reduce the wage budget and ease the finances of the cash-strapped League One club.
