Tuesday's Champions League round-up

Wayne Rooney's double strike took his Champions League goals tally to 26 as Manchester United eventually secured a 2-0 win at St Otelul Galati.

Rooney is now the leading English goalscorer in the Champions League, followed by Paul Scholes (24), Frank Lampard (20) and Steven Gerrard (19).

It took United a while to get going and, after Rooney broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 64 minutes, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Vidic was sent off.

It was a 10 versus 10 contest when Perendija was shown his second yellow late on, before Rooney secured victory with his second goal in stoppage time.

The result leaves United in second place on five points at the half way stage in Group B, two points behind Benfica and one ahead of FC Basel.

Manchester City kept their hopes of qualifying alive but they left it late, before Sergio Aguero's winner four minutes into stoppage time.

It was an important goal and without it City would have been just a point ahead of bottom side Villarreal in Group A, three behind Napoli and five adrift of group leaders Bayern Munich.

The night's big winners were Real Madrid, who scored three second half goals to secure a 4-0 victory against Lyon, their third win in as many Group D games. Khedira, Ozil (pictured) and Ramos ended Lyon's challenge.
