Merson 'lucky to be alive' after car crash

Paul Merson has admitted he is lucky to be alive after he was involved in an accident on the M40 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The former Arsenal and England player fell asleep at the wheel before crashing his black Mercedes ML350 into a Ministry of Defence lorry on the northbound section of the M40 between Junction 14 and 15 shortly after 3am.

Merson, who has fought alcohol addiction, failed a breath test and was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He suffered a cut on his head and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

ā€œI banged my head on the windscreen and the car is a write-off," he said in an interview with the Daily Mirror. "Iā€™m very lucky to have survived. I managed to get out by myself and the emergency services were brilliant. Now I just want to get home and have some rest.ā€
