Men's football tournament round-up

Spain are out, Team GB are on the brink of qualifying for the quarter-finals and Brazil are looking strong contenders for the gold medal.

There are already some surprise packages, including Japan, Honduras and Senegal, while Mexico and Korea are poised to progress from Group B, and in Group C Belarus have given themselves a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals

Total Football's Claire Needham rounds up the London 2012 men's football tournament so far.

Group A

United Arab Emirates 1-2 Uruguay

Ismaeil Matar UAE (23), Gaston Ramirez URU (42), Nicolas Lodeiro URU (56)

Great Britain 1-1 Senegal

Craig Bellamy GB (20), Moussa Konate SEN (82)

Senegal 2-0 Uruguay

Moussa Konate SEN (10, 37)

Great Britain 3-1 United Arab Emirates

Ryan Giggs GB (16), Scott Sinclair GB (73), Daniel Sturridge GB (76), Rashed Eisa UAE (60)

Great Britain are currently top of the group with four points from two games, with Senegal second on goal difference. However, the United Arab Emirates are out of the competition with zero points and Uruguay have to secure a victory over Great Britain in the last group game to ensure they qualify for the knockout stages.

Group B

Mexico 0-0 Korea

Gabon 1-1 Switzerland

Pierre Aubameyang GAB (45), Admir Mehmedi SWI (5 pen)

Mexico 2-0 Gabon

Giovani Dos Santos MEX (63, 90+2 pen)

Korea 2-1 Switzerland

Chuyoung Park KOR (57), Bokyung Kim KOR (64), Innocent Emeghara SWI (60)

Mexico have qualified for the next round, and any of the three other teams can join them as they are all on one point. Korea seem most likely to progress as they have a better goal difference of +1 in comparison to Switzerland (-1) and Gabon (-2).

Group C

Belarus 1-0 New Zealand

Dmitry Baga BEL (45)

Brazil 3-2 Egypt

Rafael Pereira Da Silva BRA (16), Leandro Damiao da Silva Dos Santos BRA (26), Neymar BRA (30), Mohamed Aboutrika EGY (52), Mohamed Salah Ghaly EGY (76)

Egypt 1-1 New Zealand

Mohamed Salah Ghaly EGY (40), Chris Wood NZ (17)

Brazil 3-1 Belarus

Alexandre Rodrigues Da Silva BRA (15), Neymar BRA (65), Oscar BRA (90+3), Renan Bardini Bressan BEL (8)

Brazil have qualified for the next round with a maximum six points so far. Belarus are the other team to have secured a win so seem most likely to join Brazil in the knockout stages. Egypt and New Zealand are still in with a chance of qualification as they both have one point, although New Zealand are up against Brazil in their final group game.

Group D

Honduras 2-2 Morocco

Jerry Bengston HON (56, 65 pen), Abdelaziz Barrada MOR (39), Zakaria Labyad MOR (67)

Spain 0-1 Japan

Yuki Otsu JAP (34)

Japan 1-0 Morocco

Kensuke Nagai JAP (84)

Spain 0-1 Honduras

Jerry Bengston HON (7)

Spain have failed to qualify for the next round after two defeats, but Japan are already through to the next round after their two wins. Honduras are the most likely team to join Japan from this group with four points already secured from their first two games.
