Redknapp sees the benefit in Olympic scouting mission

Ex-Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes Olympic football is not only worthwhile in terms of representing the nation, but also great in terms of scouting lesser-known talents and sourcing relatively unknown quantities.

With nations not usually participating at World Cups or European Championships taking part at London 2012, this represents a unique opportunity to cast the microscope over potential new signings who may well make waves during the three-week men’s event.

Redknapp - a Sky Sports Fantasy Football ambassador - has built a reputation as a shrewd negotiator in the transfer market and has not been afraid of bringing older, experienced pros to his clubs, despite scepticism surrounding the fact their best days are probably behind them.

Whilst getting the best out of over-30 professionals, Redknapp is still fully aware of the younger market and what the Olympics can do in terms of added exposure in the largely under-23 tournament.

Redknapp said: “Everyone will be looking at the young players taking part this summer to see if they can pick up somebody that has slipped under the radar.

“The Olympics will be well scouted. Every tournament is nowadays. It’s like the African Nations Cup, clubs all send scouts over there to watch all the games. Clubs can’t afford not to be watching, you need to have some sort of representation there.”

Players of keen interest include Oscar, who signed for Chelsea on Wednesday. The 20-year-old will be competing for Brazil in a side which is much-fancied for the gold medal.

Elsewhere Uruguay boast Bologna’s Gaston Ramirez who has been interesting Premier League sides Liverpool and Redknapp’s ex-employers Tottenham.

Perhaps lesser known talents include Egypt’s Islam ‘Milo’ Ramadan who is reportedly being tracked by Arsenal and New Zealand’s Cameron Howieson who is part of Burnley’s young development set-up.

Aside from these pros, there is likely to be a whole host more whom we are yet to find out about and may just well be lining up for your club sometime in the future.
