Senegal reach the last eight with a draw

Senegal 1-1 UAE

Senegal have reached the last eight of the men's football tournament at their first attempt.

They drew 1-1 with the United Arab Emirates at the City of Coventry Stadium, meaning they finish second in Group A behind the group winners Team GB.

Moussa Konate (pictured) continued his rich vein of form for the Africans, scoring his fourth goal in three matches.

The United Arab Emirates might have exited the tournament but they once again showed their dynamic attacking moves and the bundle of team spirit, which has won them many fans at the Olympics.

Senegal's physical strength was on show here too as it was in their opening two matches, but they fell behind after 20 minutes against the run of play.

Rashed Eisa, who scored a brilliant goal against Team GB, drove a ball into the box, which was delicately finished off by UAE captain Ismaeil Matar.

The Africans didn't panic though and found a way back into the game in the early moments of the second half.

Mohamed Diame's pass found Pape Souare. Souare delivered a great ball from the left wing and his cross was met with a perfect header by Konate.

It was Konate's fourth goal of this tournament, making him a clear favourite now for the Golden Boot award.

Three minutes later he could have doubled his tally for the match, only to be denied from close range by goalkeeper Khalid Eisa.

Senegal had more chances, with Kara Mbodji hitting the post from a corner but the Asians held on for a point, which wasn't merited here but was for their efforts throughout the three matches.

The dangerous Senegal side will now meet Mexico at the weekend in the last eight at Wembley.
