Team GB fall to impressive Brazil

Two first-half goals condemned Team GB to defeat against an impressive Brail team at the Riverside.

Spurs midfielder Sandro gave the visitors the lead after just 12 minutes with a well-taken header at the far-post, before Neymar converted from the spot just over 20 minutes later.

The home side struggled to cope with the attacking prowess of their more illustrious opponents, with the pace of Hulk and Neymar carving the Team GB defence open almost at will.

And the warning signs were there within just eight minutes, when a defensive mix-up saw Neymar burst through the centre of the defence, only to fire wide.

And, minutes later, Brazil took the lead with Neymar’s floating cross causing panic in the Great Britain defence, allowing Sandro to lose his marker and loop a header over the despairing Jason Steele.

Britain found chances few and far between all evening, but were almost level when Micah Richards found himself on the end of a whipped Ryan Giggs cross, but the Manchester City defender could only head across the goal.

Unfortunate penalty

And things soon worsened for Richards after he conceded a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Hulk.

Neymar, who showed glimpses of why he is currently the hottest property in world football, tucked home the resulting spot kick.

And the pressure on the British goal continued after the break, when Hulk produced some good work down the left flank, before pulling back to Oscar, who forced a smart save from substitute keeper Jack Butland.

But it was Neymar who was at the centre of almost every Brazilian move, and he nearly made it 3-0, firing just wide of Butland’s far-post on 80 minutes.

Great Britain’s best chance in the second half to speak of was when Craig Bellamy met Danny Rose’s cross just before the hour, forcing a wonderful save from Rafael, not that it would have counted, as the Welshman was caught offside.

Minutes later, Rose again managed to find some space down the left, before dipping a tempting looking corss into the box, but was just too high for captain Ryan Giggs.

It summed up what was ultimately a frustrating evening for Stuart Pearce's side.
